✦ Synopsis

The synthesis of a,S-epoq sulfoxides (1) and sulfones (2,3) has been described recently.

This communication reports the thermal and acid catalyzed rearrangements of a,S-epoxy sulfolddes Ia and Ib and of the corresponding a,@epoxy sulfones, IIa and IIb, as examples of what appears to be a general method and the one of choice for the synthesis of S-csrbonyl sulfoxides and sulf0nes.l

We have found that the Darzens condensation reported earlier (2) as a general synthesis for a,S-epoxy sulfones works equally well for the sulfoxide analogs, eq. 111.

a.B-Epoxy diazomethyl ketones, a class of compounds that recently became a-vailable1'2, possess two functional groups sensitive to acidic reagents. In a previous paper' we showed that with proton acids the primary reaction takes place at the diazomethyl ketone moiety, e.g. hydrogen chloride in ether
