Abstract

  1. D‐Galacturonic acid is partially decarboxylated in water by heavy metal ions at 96° under weakly acidic conditions. No furfurol, but arabinose is formed. The mtalytic action increases in the following order: Mgf^+^ < Zn^++^ < Ni^++^ < Al^+++^ < Pb^++^.
