Abstract

5‐Carboxy‐2‐furfural is formed in a few minutes by the action of cone. sulfuric acid on D‐galacturonic acid. This substance seems to be mainly responsible for Dische's colour reaction of hexuronic acids with sulfuric acid and carbazole.

## Abstract 1. D‐Galacturonic acid is partially decarboxylated in __water__ by heavy metal ions at 96° under weakly acidic conditions. No furfurol, but arabinose is formed. The mtalytic action increases in the following order: Mgf^+^ < Zn^++^ < Ni^++^ < Al^+++^ < Pb^++^.
