✦ Synopsis

For compounds in which the geminal group is replaced by a single methyl or ethyl group, formation of a 6-ring could not be excluded theoretically. Practically, in this case also no ring closure occured.

It is concluded that ring closure to carbocyclic compounds fails when the geminal dimethyl group-or perhaps two other small alkyl substituents-is not present at one end of the aliphatic diene system.

The importance of the particular structure of true terpene compounds for the acid-catalyzed cyclization is emphasized.
