✦ Synopsis
The generation of metastable O, ('Xg+) and Oz('Ag) in the H + 0, system of reactions was studied by the flow discharge chemiluminescence detection method. In addition to the Oz('Pg') and Oz('
, H0,(2A~oo) + H02(2AlohO), H02(zA~o,) + HO,(zA~oo), and H Oz(2A~oo) --+ H0,(2A&,o) emissions were detected in the H + 0, system. The rate constants for the quenching of 02('Zg+) by H and Hz were determined to be (5.1 ? 1.4) x and (7.1 C 0.1) x cm3 s-', respectively. An upper limit for the branching ratio to produce O,('Pg+) by the H + H 0 2 reaction was calculated to be 2.1%. The contributions from other reactions producing singlet oxygen were investigated.

The reaction of atomic hydrogen with 02('Ag) has been investigated as a function of temperature, using a fast discharge-flow apparatus equipped for EPR detection of free radical species. The rate constant for the overall reaction was measured as (1.46 f 0.49) X 10-I' exp(-4000 f 200 cal/mol/RT) cm3/
