β¦ Synopsis
The XPS spectra of Y,Ni and Gd,Ni single crystals, pure gadolinium and nickel have been measured with monochromatized Al K_ radiation. The valence bands of Y,Ni and Gd,Ni compounds consist of a single narrow state of nickel 3d (1.7 eV below the Fermi level) which is hybridized with the 4d states of yttrium or 5d states of gadolinium. Due to hybridization effects spin fluctuations on nickel are observed in the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements.
