✦ Synopsis
We have used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the oxidation states of Hg and Cu in HgBa2CuO4+6. Contrary to the general expectations, we have observed three chemically different species of Hg. Two different types of Hg ions are in the 2 + oxidation state and the other species is present in an unusual oxidation state of 3 +. Cu also shows the mixed-valent character ( 1 +, 2 + and 3 + ) in this superconductor. Argon-annealed HgBa2CuO4 + ~ shows a decrease in Hg (III) content suggesting that Hg plays an important role in this superconductor. An internal redox mechanism is predicted in HgBa2CuO4+6.
