We have used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the oxidation states of Hg and Cu in HgBa2CuO4+6. Contrary to the general expectations, we have observed three chemically different species of Hg. Two different types of Hg ions are in the 2 + oxidation state and the other species is prese

✦ Synopsis
HgBaCuO4+a compound is synthesized from the solid state reaction of the precursors Ba2CuO3 and HgO. The structure and the crystallite size are determined using the X-ray diffraction technique. The crystallite size depends on the reflecting plane (hkl) and the average size is ~ 90 nm. The superconducting transition temperature Tc and the irreversibility line are determined from AC magnetic susceptibility measurements in magnetic fields up to 1 T. The Tc value of the compound is 95.3 + 0.5 K.
