โฆ Synopsis
This was the last of four one-day seminars held weekly at the University of Southampton from 25 February to 17 March. These seminars are intended for review and discussion of new ideas and techniques in Cr3,ogenics and bring together speakers from industry, government establishments, and universities and audiences from just as varied backgrounds. Previous seminars have been on cryostat and dewar design, air separation plants, and compressors, expanders, and pumps for cryogenic plants. The informal atmosphere of these seminars enables speakers to freely express their opinions on their particular field and how they see its future development.

Yhermoacoustic oscillations are well known in cryogenics; in most cases they occur spontaneously and are undesired. Much work has been done to calculate this effect; with the final breakthrough achieved by Rott. In part 1 of this paper, we present an extension to Rott's theory, which allows its appl
