Previously steam explosion had been used to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates to glucose. The conditions for pretreating aspen wood chips were optimized so that highest amounts of undegraded hemicellulose could be obtained after washing the steam exploded chips. The hemi
