Abstract

A simple folded planar metal‐plate monopole antenna suitable for operation as a wideband internal antenna for a folder‐type mobile phone is presented. The folder‐type mobile phone is modeled to comprise an upper ground plane and a lower ground plane, and the proposed antenna is employed at the hinge position between the upper and lower ground planes. The antenna has a compact structure and yet generates a wide operating bandwidth of about 4.8 GHz (from about 1.7 to 6.5 GHz), allowing it to easily cover UMTS and WiMAX operations. Details of the proposed antenna are described, and the experimental results of constructed prototypes are presented and discussed. The effects of the various lengths of the upper ground plane on the impedance matching of the antenna are also studied. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
