✦ Synopsis

The SOS response in UV-irradiated bacteria enhances the survival and mutagenesis of infecting damaged bacteriophage 2. In a lexA(Def) strain, SOS bacterial genes are fully derepressed by an inactivating mutation in the LexA repressor gene. We tested several lexA(Def) derivative strains for their capacity to constitutively promote high survival and mutagenesis of irradiated 2. We showed that UV irradiation of the lexA(Def) host bacteria is still necessary for optimal efficiency of both these SOS functions, which are dependent on the umuC gene product and an activated form of RecA protein.

Entry of DNA from lambda phages particles into lambdarMAl- mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 is shown to be due to two distinguishable processes. One, residual transduction, results from a low level expression of lamB. The other one, background transduction, is independent of gene lamB. Interpretatio

W-reactivation is reduced by recF143 and recF144 mutations and is undetectable if a second mutation at either the uvrA or uvrB locus is combined with recF143. The uvrA and uvrB mutations alone block W-reactivation partially. A reeL152 mutation also partially blocks W-reactivation by itself. In combi

Over sixty EMS induced mutations affecting gene lamB, presumably the structural gene for the lambda receptor in Escherichia coli K12, were examined for growth of lambda host range mutants and effect of nonsense suppressors. By the first criterion the mutations could be grouped in three classes. Bact

The effect of the cellular level of RecA protein on the ability of E. coli K12 bacteria to (i) survive UV-irradiation (ii) promote UV-reactivation of UV-damaged phage lambda (iii) induce prophage lambda was determined in bacterial mutants with discrete increasing levels of RecA protein. The various
