✦ Synopsis
Using Goell's point-matching method under the weak guidance approximation, we obtain and interpret the modal dispersion cur¨es for some low-order modes sustained by an optical wa¨eguide whose guiding region has a double-con¨ex-lens-like cross section. It is found that the dispersion cur¨es are of the expected shapes. From these cur¨es, the number of sustained modes can be obtained for known ¨alues of the size parameter, the operating frequency, and the core and cladding refracti¨e indexes. This wa¨eguide may be concei¨ed as a distortion of the elliptical wa¨eguide with a trans¨erse compression at the major axis extremities.
