Using Goell's point-matching method under the weak guidance approximation, we obtain and interpret the modal dispersion cur¨es for some low-order modes sustained by an optical wa¨eguide whose guiding region has a double-con¨ex-lens-like cross section. It is found that the dispersion cur¨es are of th

✦ Synopsis
Figure 7 Plots of the transmission ratio T versus the half-branching angle A for the AGI structure with different values of refractive index n of the PFA 3 and the AGI structures are 7.8 and 9.3Њ, respectively. The improvement in the angle is thus 1.5Њ. For still lower n , 3 further improvement would be possible.
PROPOSED FABRICATION PROCEDURE
Making a portion of the waveguide GRIN is simple with polymers. A vertically step-index film is first deposited by spin coating. Photolithography followed by reactive ion etching Ž . RIE is employed to induce a lateral step-index profile throughout the length of the Y-junction. Photobleaching by ultraviolet or visible light finally yields the required GI profile over a specified lengthᎏthe profile being fixed by the transverse intensity distribution of the focused light spot. For constructing an AGI structure, laser writing would be more w x suitable 10 .
CONCLUSION
We have proposed a new design of a polymer Y-junction using GRIN profiles that offer a branch separation at the output which is wider than that for all-step profiles. The simplicity of achieving controllable GRIN profiles in polymers makes this design commercially attractive. Its potential use therefore includes high-speed modulators, thermo-optic Ž . or electro-optic switches, adders in neural networks , etc. Work is in progress on its use in digital optical switches Ž . DOSs using asymmetric junctions.
