Abstract
For a better understanding of the role of the viral load, free radicals, and cytokines in viral meningitis, we surveyed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from patients below 1 year of age who showed positive for enterovirus. In their first examinations interleukin (IL)β6 and free radicals increased whereas pleocytosis was rarely observed. ILβ6 decreased within the short period. Viral loads and free radicals increased simultaneously. ILβ6 and free radicals of CSF are helpful for diagnosis and treatment of viral meningitis at an early stage. J. Clin. Lab. An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for detection of anti-enterovirus IgM antibodies was compared with complement fixation test in 43 patients with confirmed enterovirus meningitis by RT-PCR of cerebrospinal fluids (CSF). In 34% of patients with enterovirus meningitis, IgM antibodies could be found, whereas
## Abstract The role of viruses in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is a subject of heated debate. The presence of six different neurotropic viruses was sought, including JC virus (JCV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHVβ6), and EpsteinβBarr virus (EBV), in cerebrosp
Thirty-two cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from eighteen patients with confirmed herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) were assayed by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of viral antigens. The results are expressed as an antigen ratio distinguishing between herpes s
## Abstract To investigate clonality of local T cells in viral infections of the central nervous system, the Tβcell receptor (TCR) repertoire was evaluated in T cells from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of nine patients with mumps meningitis, using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The usag
## Abstract Although case reports have described detection of rotavirus (RV) in extraintestinal sites such as the liver, kidney, and central nervous system (CNS) of children with RV gastroenteritis, CNS localization in RV infection seems to be rare. RTβPCR and nucleotide sequencing detected a G1P[8
