✦ Synopsis

Platelet counts and platelet adhesiveness were investigated in 127 premature and 149 full term newborn infants during the first 21 days of life. Platelet counts were obtained simultaneously in venous and capillary blood. Platclet adhesiveness was studied by the methods of ~u and Breddin. The results achieved were compared to the values obtained from 88 children aged 6 to 14 years.

  1. The mean platelet counts of premature and full term newborns were significantly lower during the first days of life than the values in later childhood. After the 2nd week of life platelet counts of premature and full term babies rose above the normal range of older children.

  2. Platelet adhesiveness in premature and full term infants was not distinct from that in older children.

  3. The values of platelet adhesiveness were closely correlated to the number of platelets in peripheral blood in the children of higher age group as well as in the newborn groups.
