โฆ Synopsis
Translational energy release in dissociative electron attachment to CHSI, CD31, CF,I and CF,BR has been investigated at subthermal electron energies using K(nd) Rydberg atoms and a novel time-or-flight technique incorporating position-sensitive detection of the ions. The data show that, for each target, the major portion of the energy released by electron capture appears in translation, indicating that the electron is captured directly into an antibonding orbital localized on the I or B atom followed by immediate dissociation before redistribution of the excess energy can occur within the molecule.
