✦ Synopsis

The paper is concerned with torsional buckling of a system composed of two parallel shafts coupled together by two mechanisms. The motion of the system is described by a set of non-linear differential equations with coefficients which are periodic functions of displacements. Fixed points, closed orbits, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits and orbits which are periodic in phase space are found analytically. The existence of irregular motion is demonstrated. It is found that the main reason for the sudden change of the motion from a rotary to a vibratory one is the shape of the potential energy surface.

The governing equation of an elastic prismatic shaft is the two-dimensional Poisson equation de®ned on the cross-sectional area of the shaft. In this paper, the dierential quadrature method (DQM) is employed to solve the Poisson equation on some non-rectangular domains. Singularities, which may appe

A computer programming technique of using extended transfer matrix method to the analysis of torsion-and-flexure-coupled vibration of a damped multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) shafting system subjected to external excitations is presented. A computer program based on the presented algorithm is then de
