✦ Synopsis

Time-resolved and steadystate fluorescence studlcs of proflavine in aqueous solutton are presented. The obsenauon of a monoexponentlal fluorescence decay wth a time constant decreasmg wth tnaeasing pH and the presence of an anomalous redjhift m the fluorescence spectrum as a function of pH indwate the eustence of a complex proton-transfer mechamsm in the evated state. A reaction scheme IF, proposed and the wrrespondmg proton-transfer rates are eraluated. An e\cltedstate pK value of 12.85 1s obtained for the equtibnum between the utionic form of pro&vine and the same form &ssociated at an ammo group.
