Very weak fluorescence in the ultaviolet (210-380 nm) is observed when an anthracene crystal is excited at 397 nm. They are assigned as fluorescence from S2 and S1 states in the crystal. These higher excited states are populated by fusion of two S, excitons.
With 1,2-benzanthracene and fluoranthene population of higher excited singlet states S,, (n > 1) by triplet-triple1 annihilation is energetically possible. With both compounds a delayed fluorescence Sn + So from the highest accessible singlet state St1 was found (n = 3 for 1,2-benzanthracene and n =
With hqwd \_wlutlons of the aromstlc ketones anthraqumone and 'lamhone, a P-type delayed fluorescence from upper ewited smglet states, resultmg from tnplet-tnplet annihdation, has been obsened. Some peculurltles of the triplet-triplet annihilation of aromatlc ketones are dacussed.
Photobleaching of disubstituted (methyl and phenyl) anthracenes in thin polymer films has been observed under inert atmosphere with both direct and triplet sensitized excitation, exhibiting both wavelength and intensity dependence of quantum yields (which are in the range z 10-2-10-'). The data arc
