✦ Synopsis


The high-resolution infrared spectrum of nitryl fluoride, FNO 2 , has been observed in the 1750-1825 cm 01 region. The spectrum displays extensive rotational structure consisting solely of b-type transitions and is assigned to n 4 , the NO 2 antisymmetric stretching vibration. Over 1500 infrared and 51 microwave transitions have been fitted to generate rotational constants for the £ 4 Å 1 state (n 0 Å 1793.466822 cm 01 ) and improved constants for the ground state. Rotationally resolved infrared line positions are now available for the identification of FNO 2 , an atmospheric product of CFC and HFC oxidation.
