✦ Synopsis

A comparison of the one-and tvzo-nhoton absorption spectra of triphenylene in n-heptane single crystals at 1.6 K reveals that the lowest singlet state (Sl) &of IA> symmetry while the second singlet state (S2) has 'Ai symmetry, ir. contradiction with the comrnordy accepted assignment_

The two-photon excited phosphorescenceof triphenyiene in PMMA matrix at 77 K was measured using a tunable flashramp-pumped rhodamine dye laser in the effective spectral region 32000-36000 cm-\*. The band origin of the So-S2 transition, which is uncertain in the one-photon absorption spectrum, was ob

Two-photon excitation of C6o single crystal at 4 K shows a sharp band at 1.846 eV which is assigned to the lowest tbrbidden Frenkel singlet exciton of Tlg symmetry. This assignment is supported by the analysis of Herzberg-Teller induced photoluminescence.
