Of various methods for determining the tension at the surface of cells, measurement of the flattening of a sessile drop is simplest. The form which such drops take under the opposing forces of gravity and pure surface tension has been carefully studied by a number of observers, particularly by Heydweiller (1898) and Dorsey ( '26, '28, 29), who give equations and tables for calculating the tension from certain measurements of the flattened drop. Dorsey's treatment is the most exhaustive and accurate and reference is made to his papers for a critique and details of the various methods.
