The development of a quantum computer based on a system of trapped atomic ions is described, following the proposal of Cirac and Zoller. Initial results on a two-bit quantum logic gate are presented, and select experimental issues in scaling the system to larger numbers of ions and gates are treated

β¦ Synopsis
We consider one source of decoherence for a quantum computer due to the thermal effects of the system. The upper limit of the temperature at which the logical gate operations could be carried out reliably is given, and our result is in agreement with the experiment.

The dissociation rate of protonated leucine enkephalin in a quadrupole ion trap was measured as a function of the proximity to which the ions are brought to a stability boundary. A bath gas temperature of 480 K was used so that a dissociation rate could be readily measured even when the parent ions
The sensitivity of all ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) methods is dependent on the trapping efficiency of the instrument. For ITMS instruments utilizing external ion sources, such as laser desorption, trapping efficiency is known to depend on the phase and amplitude of the radio frequency (RF) pot
An example of constrained unitary quantum dynamics in the context of trapped ions is given. We study a laser driven four-level ion system confined in an isotropic three-dimensional Paul microtrap. Our main result is that when two independent controllable continuous measurement processes are simultan
We examine several proposed schemes by Franson et al. for quantum logic gates based on non-local exchange interactions between two photons in a medium. In these schemes the presence of a single photon in a given mode is supposed to induce a large phase shift on another photon propagating in the same
