From the bud of Petasites japonicus subsp. giganteusKitam., (local name : Bakke), a plant restricted to the northern part of Japan, two new bitter sesquiterpenoids, bakkenolide -A and bakkenolide-B, have been isolated. The structure of bakkenolide-A is discussed in this communication ; bakkenolide-B, C22H3006, mp 101.5-102.5" will be discussed elsewhere.

In addition to the previously reported bakkenolide-A, structure 11, and bakkenolide -B, 1,2,3 two new sesquiterpenoids, bakkenolides-C and -D, have been isolated from the bud of Petasites japonicus subsp. giganteus Kitam. The structures of the last three compounds are discussed in this communication
