โฆ Synopsis
Although agroforestry has been practiced in Indonesia for a long time, only recently has it received the attention of professional foresters and become a subject of research and education. Several agroforestry projects and programs have recently been introduced by the Indonesian government, and trained people, especially workers, are needed in large numbers. To cope with this demand, initially foresters interested in broadening their technical knowledge were given training in agroforestry using internationally available training materials. Simultaneously, the faculties of forestry at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, and the Institute of Agriculture, Bogor started agroforestry as an elective undergraduate-level course. Currently, eight provincial forestry faculties in outer islands also teach agroforestry with special emphasis on their local needs such as management of shifting cultivation. Although no graduate-level courses are offered, many graduate students in forestry undertake research on agroforestry-related topics. A serious constraint to the development of agroforestry education in Indonesia is the language barrier, which prevents Indonesian students from having easy access to international literature.
