✦ Synopsis

China's interest in agroforestry derives from the fact that less than 12% of the total land area is forested, while demand for timber and fuel is greatly increasing. Afforestation is very active, much of it in agroforestry systems. However, there are no formal programs or courses yet in agroforestry. Currently, though, it is a popular subject for graduate student research, and there are courses under other names ('ecological forestry' or 'three dimensional forestry') that do cover much of the subject. Three-to-ten day intensive training programs are more common, including lectures and visits to demonstration farm areas.
