โœฆ Synopsis

The majority of methods available for the calorimetric determination of cerium depcnd on the oxidising properties or colour of ceric solutions. Ccrous ion can be oxidiscd by persulphate in hot acidic solution in the presence of catalytic amounts of silver ion. The yellow colour of the resulting ceric solution is sufficiently intense for the determination of milligram amounts of cerium l-3. A rather more sensitive procedure depends on the yellow colour which is formccl when a ccrous salt is treated with potassium carbonate in the presence of air or hydrogen peroxide 4-O. In acid solution, ceric ion oxidises a number of organic compounds, such as brucine', sulphanilic acide, benzi-dinc~~lo, and the leucobase of malachite green 11, to coloured compounds which can be used for the photometric determination of the element.

A method is described for determining microgram amounts of chitin in arthropod cuticles. The method, adapted from one described for assaying plant material for fungal content, is based on estimating soluble chitosan derivatives and is not affected by the presence of nonchitinous cuticular components
