✦ Synopsis

Cancer of the head and neck arises most often from body surfaces that have been exposed to deleterious environmental influences. These body surfaces include the skin and the linings of the air and food passages. Solar radiation, alcohol, and tobacco are currently at the top of the list of the damaging agents. As the inlet for tobacco and alcohol, the oral cavity is a necessary recipient of the destructive effects of these substances. In addition, excessive tobacco and alcohol consumption is often associated with poor oral hygiene. Thus the patient. who presents with head and neck cancer often brings an associated legacy of oral disease. If unrecognized and untreated, such disease can interfere with and profoundly affect the choices of therapies and their eventual outcome.
