## Abstract Significant progress in understanding the mechanisms leading to the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has led to the identification of numerous molecular abnormalities that may be responsible for leukemogenesis. Over the same period, large trials have established standard regi

Abstract
Plasma cholesterol concentrations were determined in 83 acute myeloid leukemia patients. Mean plasma cholesterol concentration (Β± S.D.) at the time of diagnosis was 2Β·91 mmol/L(Β± 1Β·13). The percentage of AML patients having hypocholesterolemia was 90Β·4 per cent. The lowest cholesterol levels were observed in the poorly differentiated FAB subtypes of acute myeloid leukaemia: AMyL(M1) and AMoL(M5a). The results showed that the initial hypocholesterolemia in acute myeloid leukemia is significantly related to the degree of both cytological and cytochemical maturation of leukemic blast cells at diagnosis. The degree of maturation at diagnosis has been shown to be related to prognosis in favour of more differentiated subtypes of acute myeloid leukemia. Also, hypocholesterolemia has been shown in several epidemiological studies to be related to an increased mortality from human cancer. Therefore, the degree of maturation may serve as a link between hypocholesterolemia and the increased mortality from human cancer.

## Abstract Gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) is a chemotherapeutic agent that consists of a humanized antiβCD33 antibody (hP67.6) linked to NβacetylβΞ³ calicheamicin 1,2βdimethyl hydrazine dichloride, a potent enediyne antitumor antibiotic. GO was approved conditionally by the Federal Drug Administration
Cytogenetic abnormalities involving the 11q23 region are found in both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and myeloid leukemia (AML). Molecular consequences of 11q23 translocations are the formation of chimeric genes, all of them involving the MLL (mixed-lineage leukemia) gene. To evaluate the usefu
One hundred and twenty-five cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) were reviewed for the presence of Auer rods by two peroxidase methods. The percentage of Auer rods recognized by Wright-Giemsa (WG) staining was 20.8% but three times higher by peroxidase staining techniques using either benzidine bas
Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) protein plays a dual role in regulation of mitosis and inhibition of apoptosis. Survivin is expressed in embryonic and fetal organs as well as in most human cancers, but not in normal differentiated adult tissues. In this study we investigated the molecular
