✦ Synopsis

The spectrum of SO(X31;-f'has been observed following the flash excitation of sulphur dioxide ~6th radiation abovr 250 nm. Sulphui monoxide is produced via an excited molecula mcchanisn invoking triplet S02. The tale constant r^or the reaction 3S02 + SO2 was measured as (3.1 f 1) X IO8 ;li-I scC'.

Triplet sulphur dioxide has been shown to be produced following light absorption in the first aIlowed band [l--3] SO,(XIA,) + izv (240-340 nm) -?r S02(A" B1), (I) SO,(X"A1) f S02(A1B,) + SOz(a3B1) + SO, (2)
