✦ Synopsis

ScvcraI mcaurcments have been made by various authors on the relative contnbutmn to the Halmcra crntrsiun or the 35 state of hydrogen atolns rcsultlng frown the dlrsociatwe evcltation of El2 by electrons in the energy range 20 to 500 cV. Thcsc mcasurcmcnts, however, arc mutually Inconsistent c\cept bctwccn two mc~suremcnts. one of the decay of at cqu~librium population CA' the 35, 3p and 3d \tntcs. and the other based on analysis of rl short electron-pulse technique. WC have: uwd the equdlbrmm method coupled with a tlmc-delayed-observation technique to IIIL'BSU~C the contribution of the 3s state of hydrogen atoms. Our c\perimcntal results agree with thocc found prcvioudy by means of the short electron-puIsr: technique as well as with other dcterminatmns nt SO and 1 10 cV, thus contirming that less than 20:: of the hydrolran ntoms formed m the tz = 3 energy Ic\cl arc formed m the 3s ctntc.

A mixture of NF3 and Ar is passed through an rf discharge in a flowAystern to product, among other species, F and NFz. When Ha, D?;, or CH? are added downstream, reactions with F atoms poduce vibratiomlly esci:ed HI: or DF together with H, D, or CHJ. The latter free radicais can react with NF2, pro
