✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A rapid and mild procedure for the preparation of [N‐7‐methyl‐^11^C] caffeine is described. Gaseous ^11^C‐methyl iodide wa led into dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), containing theophylline (1,3‐dimethylaxanthine) and sodium hydride. Purification of the reaction product was achieved by High Performance Liquid Chromatogrphy (HPLC).

Extractive isolation followed by chromatographic purification provided material of purity suitable for metabolism studies.

## Abstract Several easy preparative scale (0.5–1.5 g) syntheses of deuterium labelled caffeine, theophylline and theobromine are described. Some new selective syntheses of theophylline and theobromine have been developed. Labelled xanthines are of great interest in qualitative or quantitative isot
