Abstract
A new model of metamagnetic phase transition with temperature in Mn~3~GaC is proposed. The magnetoelastic Hamiltonian takes into account two independent strains (trigonal and isotropic ones) as functions of temperature, calculated similarly to the microscopic theory of magnetostriction. Necessary conditions for the transition are established within the molecular field approximation and the fit with experiment is discussed.

We present investigations of the magnetocaloric effect on the heavy fermion metamagnetic phase transition at B, = 20 T. We relate the results to measurements of the heat capacity in high magnetic fields and discuss a correlation between the metamagnetic phase transition and the susceptibility.
