✦ Synopsis

A significant uptake of supercritical mobile phases into immobilized stationary phases has been observed. The phase swelling effect has been evaluated hydrodynamically for SE-30, SE-54, and cyanopropyl silicone phases with respect to the mobilephase density of supercritical butane, column temperature, and the presence of a polar retention moderator. Some kinetic and retention consequences of the swelling phenomena are discussed.
