✦ Synopsis


White Portland cement, (a cement containing less than 0.3% iron oxide), reacts rapidly with salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxybenzaldehyde), causing rapid setting and hardening in the absence of added water. One of the reaction products was identified as a calcium complex of salicylaldehyde (CHOC6HsO)zCa. Trimethylsilylation of the White Portland cement (wpc) showed that the polymerisation degree of the silicate anions in the cement was unaffected by the salicylaldehyde. A study of the rate of subsequent hydration in the prescence of additional water indicated that the hydration of the wpc was retarded by the calcium complex.
