✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The chemical ionization spectra of a series of deuterated heptanals has been studied using methane and isobutane. Loss of water from the [MH]^+^ ion follows the same pattern as in electron ionization; hydrogen (deuterium) is lost from all positions except C‐1 and C‐2. The reagent proton is found in the water lost only to the extent of 28% and this is confirmed using deuteriomethane. Possible mechanisms are discussed.

## Abstract The mechanism of water loss from the 1‐beptanol molecular ion was studied by using a set of deuterium 1‐heptanols labelled at each position of the chain. Water loss from trans-sobrerol upon electron impact ionization selectively involves the tertiary OH group, predominantly occurring by a stereocontrolled H-transfer from C(5) position in a rate-determining step process, as proved by '\*O and deuterium labelling. Monomethyl ethers behave accordingly.

The dissociation of a labeled ligand from a binding structure to which it is reversibly attached can be promoted either by dilution or by chase. The kinetics of the dissociation brought up by dilution can be modified or not by the presence of various concentrations of cold ligand, according to the m
