✦ Synopsis

We report the discovery of high-lying, very-lung-lived Rydberg states in NO. With that we were able to determine the ionization potential of NO to be 74721.7 & 0.4 cm-'. The existence ofthese States explains a discrepancy between the values for the ionizatlon energy of NO from "zero kinetic energy photoelectron spectroscopy" and Rydbcrg f-series extrapolations. Now these values are in perfect agreement. Hence we propose a general method for the direct measurement of highly accurate ionization potentials.

Variation of the reaction mechanism for homogeneous thermal decomposition of NO into N 2 a n d O2 in the temperature range between 1000 and 4000 K is studied. The decomposition always proceeds through an atomic chain mechanism initiated by formation of oxygen atom. However the step of the oxygen ato
