✦ Synopsis

The torsion-inversion potential surface for hydrazine has been determined from the rovibrational data using a new rotation-torsion-inversion Hamiltonian. All elements of the inverse moment of inertia tensor have been expanded into mixed Fourier series of large amplitude coordinates. That gives two major advantages: (i) no numerical integration is necessary at any step of calculation, and (ii) the three-dimensional integrals have been replaced by the products of onedimensional integrals. It has been proven that the inversion-torsion coupling in hydrazine is negligible and the inversioninversion coupling is very strong. The barrier to inversion of 2072 cm 01 is slightly higher than that in ammonia and the barrier to internal rotation of 934 cm 01 is relatively high but lower than that determined previously from onedimensional models.

The twodimensional potential function for inversion of the amino groups in hydrazine has been obtained from a fit to the available infrared and microwave data. The barriers of 3408 and 20 16 cm-' have been calculated for the symmetric and antisymmetric inversions of both amino groups, respectively.

## Abstract The energies of four different conformations for __n__‐butane were calculated by the __ab initio__ method using an STO‐3G basis set. Fully relaxed molecular geometries obtained from molecular mechanics (MM2) were used. The two energy minima [anti (__C__~__2h__~), gauche (__C__~__2__~)]

A variety of milimeter-wave and far-infrared spectral data on the internal rotor HSSH has been used to determine the cis and tram barrier heights to torsional motion. Our values of 2800( ) and I990( 15) cm-' for V,,, and V,,,,,, respectively, are in good agreement with the results of ab initio calcu
