โฆ Synopsis
Abslraet-In this paper the crack initiation under stress-assisti diffusion is studied. Around the crack-tip a core region is developed by the stress-assisted dflusion. This core region is a strongIy brittle area which depends on the sum of the principal stresses at the crack-tip and on phenomenological coeflicients. Based on this assumption, the crack extension angle is determined by use of the Det.-criterion. This study is applied for various materials with different phenomenological coefficients.

The stress intensity factors which result when an axially cracked ring containing residual stresses is subjected to an external load have been calculated using a numerical method. When partial crack closure occurs, it has been taken into account. The computations show that residual stresses can caus
