β¦ Synopsis
AbstraetmRadiation-induced polymerization of N-phenylmaleimide (N-FMI) of various degrees of purity has been studied. The degree of monomer conversion increases with increase of purity for processes in the liquid phase. The situation is more complicated for the solid-phase where degree of purity and also defects in the solid are important.
The influence of defects in the monomer crystals has been studied for polymerization of binary systems with various non-polymerizable additives: N-FMI-fluorene (F), N-FMI-diphenyl (DF), maleimide (MI)-F. The various additives have different effects on solid-state polymerization. In the case of N-FMI, addition of a non-isomorphous additive caused marked sensitization. In the case of MI, there is inhibition.
