✦ Synopsis


USing a rotating gold ring-lead disc electrode and analysing the deposit on the ring surface with Xray photoelectron spectroscopy, soluble Pb(IV) species were detected during the auodic reaction of the PbS04/Pb02 electrode in sulfuric acid. The Pb(IV) species are not intermediates in the PbOs formation but result from the chemical solubility of PbO*. Measurements of soluble Pb(II) proved that the '*coup de fouet" commonly observed during the discharge of the lead acid battery is due to the oversaturation of Pb(I1) ions.
