✦ Synopsis

A scanning electron microscope investigation of the structure of the reduced Pb/PbS0 4 electrode revealed that lignin prevented the extensive growth of dendritic lead single crystals that occurred in its absence . It was further shown that the smooth surfaced, large diameter dendritic branches, present in additive-free electrodes were replaced by smaller. more uniform, rough surfaced and porous particles in the presence of lignin . No significant changes' occurred in the lead structure when RaSO, alone was added . Lignin and BaSO,,, used together, produced a lead structure with greater surface urea rind porosity than did lignin alone .

USing a rotating gold ring-lead disc electrode and analysing the deposit on the ring surface with Xray photoelectron spectroscopy, soluble Pb(IV) species were detected during the auodic reaction of the PbS04/Pb02 electrode in sulfuric acid. The Pb(IV) species are not intermediates in the PbOs format

The crystal structure of tribasic lead sulfate (3PbO β€’ PbSO 4 β€’ H 2 O) has been determined by a combination of single crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction to R of 0.024.
