β¦ Synopsis
The rate coefficient of the reaction CHzOH + 02 -HO2 + CH20. has been measured at 300 K by the LMR flow-tube method, and found to have the unexpectedly large value k = (2J) x 1O-'2 cm3 molecule-' s-I_ This reaction. preceded by fiomenzafion, may be an important route for the oxidation of CHJO m the upper atmosphere. One of the surprises encountered durmg measurements of the laser magnetic resonance (LMR) spectrum of CH,O [l] was that the source reaction, F + CH30H + CH30 + HF, also generated intense LMR spectra of HO,. These spectra could be mtenslfied further by addmg oxygen to the gas-flow system, and subsequent efforts showed that they could be ehmmated by purifying the inlet gases and by making the flow system ngorously leak-tight. ## Abstract The reaction of hydroxyl [OH] radicals with formaldehyde [CH~2~O] was studied at temperatures ranging from 934 K to 1670 K behind reflected shock waves at an average total pressure of 1.6 atm. OH radicals were produced by shockβheating tertβbutyl hydroperoxide [(CH~3~)~3~ο£ΏCOο£ΏOH], while
The rate constant for the reaction CH302 + NO2 -(products) has been measured directly by flash photolysis and kinetic spectroscopy. At room temperature and a t total pressures between 53 and 580 Torr, k:, = (9.2 f 0.4) X lo8 liter/mole sec so that the rate of formation of the probable primary produc
