✦ Synopsis

The essential oils of fresh leaves, ¯owers and fruits of Vitex agnus-castus L., growing in north Brazil, were obtained by hydrodistillation and their volatile constituents were identi®ed by GC±MS. The most abundant constituents found were 1,8-cineole, (E)-b-farnesene, sabinene, a-pinene, a-terpenyl acetate, b-caryophyllene and bicyclogermacrene. Their compositions were compared with oils from Europe and Nigeria. 1,8-Cineole was an important component in all the samples analysed.
