✦ Synopsis

The electrochemical behaviour of sodium chloride and sodium iodide dissolved in diiethylsulphoxide on platinum electrodes has been examined. The cathodic reaction involves the initial discharge of sodium ion and subsequent chemical reactions between metallic sodium and the solvent.

The anodic reaction occurring in the electrolysis of sodium iodide involves reactions of the iodide and t&iodide ions. Solutions of sodium iodide with added iodine were also electrolysed. The results indicate the existence of the equilibrium I-+ I I *III-, and are explained on the basis of an equilibrium constant for t&iodide formation that is larger than that in aqueous solutions.

## Abstract We have prepared a cross‐linked polystyrene anion exchange composite membrane for the electrolysis of sodium chloride to produce sodium hydroxide by selective removal of chloride ions. The composite membrane is homogeneously modified by gas phase nitration, followed by amination using h
