Abstract
A rapid and accurate method for determination of nicotine in a large number of plant or dust samples is described. Nicotine is extracted with light petroleum from an alkaline suspension of finely powdered material. The petroleum is then shaken with dilute hydrochloric acid and the aqueous portion is made up to volume. An aliquot is treated with 0Β·04% bromothymol blue and a suitable buffer, and shaken with chloroform; the nicotine is determined by examination of the coloured chloroform extract in a Spekker absorptiometer, using a 601 violet filter.
