The assignment of the absorption spectra of 2-hydroxytropone (2-HT) is reported by measuring the circular dichroism spectra of the &cycIodextrin complexes \vith 2-HT and 2-H-f anion It is concluded that the fEst (270-400 nm) and second (210-270 MI) bands of 2-HT are respectively composed of two elec

✦ Synopsis
When azulene is included in the cavïty of ficyclodextrin @CDx), ìnduced circulu dichroïsm (CD) bands are observed in the corresponding absorption bands of azulene. On the basis of the theoretical conclusions for @-CDx complexes with naphthalene derfvatïves of Harata and Uedaim, it is concluded from the sïgns of tbe CD bands that the fust (about 455 to 715 nm), third (about 290 to 305 nm) and ftith (at about 238 nm) absorption bands have the transition dipote moments perpendicular to the long axis and the second (about 305 to 360 nm), fourth (about 240 to 290 nm) and sbcth (shorter than 220 run) absorption bands have the transition dipole moments parallel to the long axïs of azulene. Our assignments are in complete agreement with earlier assïgnments. Our experimental results do not provide any informatíon regardmg two new electronic tmnsitions suggested theoretically by Thulstrup et aL
