An efficient synthesis of t h e analytically useful title compound 2 c (1,1,3,3-( 2 !-I4)-4hydroxydebrisoquine sulphate), utilising a two-step d e u t e r a t i o d I T H/ H exchange of 3nitromethylphthalide,?, and LiAl 2 H4 reduction of 3,3-( 2 H2)-4-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-I-one, 6), is described.
