✦ Synopsis

Novel complexes of vanadium(III), chromium(III) and iron(II) containing the alkaloid (-)-sparteine as a bidentate ligand have been prepared. Two of them, [VCl 3 ((-)-sparteine)] and [FeCl 2 ((-)-sparteine)], were characterised by X-ray diffraction. Known cobalt(III) and nickel(II) analogue complexes were prepared using the same procedure.

The X-ray crystal structure of 1,3-diphenylallyllithium, complexed with enantiomerically pure (-)-sparteine, was determined. The crystallized complex is stereohomogeneous. Its subsequent electrophilic substitution reactions proceed with low enantioselectivity.

Reaction of pentaerythrityl tetrabromide with fluorenyl potassium gave the title compound in 53% yield. The crystal structure revealed that in this unique trispiro[4.1.1.4.1.1]pentadecatetraene derivative, the adjacent rings are planar and orthogonal.
